Collecting
The Rylands holds an astonishing variety of books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual materials. They include world-class holdings of ancient papyri, early European and Chinese printing, Islamic and medieval manuscripts, bibles and modern archives.
The founding collections were purchased by Enriqueta in the 1890s. She also bequeathed her private library at Longford Hall when she died in 1908. Enriqueta also collected paintings and sculptures but most of these were sold after her death.
