Stephen Joseph Tennant (1843-1914)

Stephen Joseph Tennant was Rylands’s twin brother (born Jose Esteban). He worked for Rylands and Sons, but was less business-minded than his sister. He preferred to sit with a cigar, reading a French novel. Stephen read Rylands’s acceptance speech when she was awarded the Freedom of the City of Manchester in 1899 and represented Rylands at the unveiling of her statue in 1907.

Stephen was one of the nine founding trustees of The John Rylands Library and honorary treasurer. One of his sons, Stephen Leonard was an architect who worked on fitting out of the ‘bookrooms’ at the Library, on various properties belonging to Rylands in Stretford, and on the extension to the Library after Rylands’s death.

Another son, known as Tony, graduated with a BA from the University of Manchester in 1905. He worked at the Library in 1906-1908, apparently as a private employee of Enriqueta Rylands, probably working on the manuscript collections. After Rylands’s death, he continued to do ‘excellent work’ at the Library but without salary, until he left in December 1908.

Camila Dalcour Green nee Tennant (1873-1905)

Stephen's daughter, Camila, was an Associate of Owens College (MA 1897). She was friends with History professor T.F. Tout and his wife Mary nee Johnson. In 1902 Tennant married John Alfred Green (1867-1929), an educationalist (not related to J. Arnold Green). Camila died young; her baby was named Stephen Bernard Rylands Green.
